smr_DSC07619The following is the official press release issues by South Yorkshire Police into the accident on the A6135 30th November 2009.

The A6135 between Chapeltown and Hoyland was closed between the hours 23:09 last night and 01:36 this morning, so that debris could be removed after a road traffic collision.

Investigations are ongoing but early reports indicate that a silver Peugeot, travelling from Chapeltown towards Hoyland, appears to have lost control on a bend, left the road, hit a crash barrier and then a tree. All four occupants of the vehicle were male, 19 years old and from Birdwell, Barnsley. The three passengers were treated for minor injuries at Barnsley District General Hospital. The driver was treated for lacerations to his leg.

Early indications are that a second vehicle swerved to avoid the collision and hit a verge. The 18 year old driver from Sheffield experienced a bump to his head.

The crash barrier was severely damaged as a result of the incident and several conifers were ripped up and thrown through the greenhouse of a neighbouring property.

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council are currently reviewing a report into road safety issues at this location, submitted in collaboration with South Yorkshire Police in 2006.
